Joan Christine Whalen “Joanie” 74 ,passed away July 1st, 2024 at Bayfront Hospital in St Petersburg Florida. She was born November 15, 1949 in Moline, IL to Richard and Donna (Hollembaek) Moore. Her presence will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

 

Joan was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Donna Moore. She is survived by her devoted husband, Bernie Whalen of St Petersburg, Florida; her loving daughter, Holly (Justin) Ryan of Brandon, Florida; and her dear son, Ryan Apt of Colona, Illinois. She is also survived by her cherished father, Richard Moore of Galesburg, Illinois.

 

Joan's legacy lives on through her adoring grandchildren, Hayes Apt and Callen Apt of Geneseo, Illinois. She will be remembered fondly by her treasured siblings: sisters Terry (Don) Pheiffer of Wyoming, Illinois and Jennifer (Jimmy) Johnson of Tampa, Florida; and brothers Jan (Jane) Moore of Jenison, Michigan and Gale (Trina) Moore of Lake Placid, Florida. Joan also leaves behind several nieces and a nephew who were dear to her heart.

 

Joan was raised and educated in Alexis Illinois, graduating from Alexis High School with the Class of 1967. She worked at Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL for Recreation, Park and Tourism Administration until retirement, and move to St Petersburg, Florida

 

Joan found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. The beach was one of her favorite places, where she felt a deep connection with nature. She cherished her time spent with family and friends, always finding new ways to bring joy into their lives. Her beloved dogs—Rocky, Lucy, Lily, and Daisy—along with her grand doggy, Nugget, were constant companions who brought her endless happiness.

 

Joan had a passion for shopping, particularly for shoes and purses, and she delighted in finding the perfect items. Her love for dancing and her skilled culinary talents were well-known among those close to her. She took immense pleasure in spoiling others and was always eager to lend a helping hand. Her thoughtfulness and selflessness were evident in all her actions, making her a beacon of kindness.

 

Her vibrant personality was further reflected in her love for the music of Neil Diamond and Eagles, the taste of Monical's Pizza, the joy of indulging in ice cream, the thrill of outdoor activities, and the energy of live music. Joan's beautiful smile and radiant spirit made her a beautiful person inside and out.

 

Joan Christine Whalen touched many lives with her kindness, generosity, and vibrant spirit. She will forever be remembered and cherished by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. May she rest in peace.

 

To all of our Friends & Family, please join us to Celebrate Joan’s life on Saturday, August 3rd, at the family home in St Petersburg Florida starting at 4:00 PM
