Joe R. Brown
November 7th, 1936 - January 18th, 2019
Joe Reynolds Brown, 82, Frankfort, formerly of London, died Friday, January 18, at the VA Hospital in Lexington. Joe graduated from London High School where he was a stand-out athlete. He attended Sue Bennett College and the University of Kentucky. He served in the US Army. Following his Army service, he returned to London and began working with Continental Telephone Company and then The Sentinel-Echo Office Supply. He was elected Mayor of London, taking office in 1974 and remained in the position until 1978. He was very involved in the London-Laurel County Development Association and the Cumberland Valley Area Development District. He was a volunteer fireman with the London Fire Department. Leaving the Mayoral position, he moved to Frankfort where he worked in the Cabinet of Economic Development for Kentucky until his retirement. He was an avid fisherman, golfer, and supporter of University of Kentucky athletics. During his retirement years he enjoyed his days at Keeneland and Juniper Hills golf course. Joe is survived by his wife, Teresa, Frankfort, his children, Marti Harris, Michelle Brock and Joe R. “Tony” Brown II & wife Donna all of London; his stepdaughter, Abby (Eric) Brumback; and his stepson, David Humphress. Grandchildren, Joshua and Haylee Harris, Abbey and Phillip Brown, Jeffrey and Meg Brock; his step grandchildren, Allison (Tyler) Warman, and Ethan Brumback; and a very special great grandson, Lincoln Warman. He is also survived by a sister, Virginia Adams, Augusta, Ga and a special cousin, Sweetie Smith, London. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tony and Maude Reynolds Brown, a brother, Teddy Brown, and son-in-law Hon. Jeff Brock. Celebrations of Joe’s life will be held Saturday, January 26 from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm at Clark Legacy Center, in Frankfort, and Saturday, February 2 from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm at the Fellowship Hall of The First Christian Church on North Main Street in London. Joe donated his body for research at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.
