Joe D. "Grandy" McConnell 77, of Gate City passed away on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at VAMC in Mountain Home, Tennessee surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Gate City, VA in 1939 to the late John McConnell and wife Phoeba. Joe served his country in the U.S. Army. He attended Daniel Boone Baptist Church. Joe retired from Eastman Kodak. Joe enjoyed spending time on the farm taking care of his long horn cattle. His greatest pleasure in life was spending time with his family; watching them in sports, dance and traveling from one adventure to another. He always knew something fun was just around the corner. In addition to his parents Joe was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lois McConnell; son, Joe Kevin McConnell; several brothers and sisters. Survivors include son, Jon McConnell and wife Sarah; daughters, Alesia "Lisa" Fish and husband Mark, Deanne "Dee Dee" Poston and husband Steve; grandchildren, Levi Herron, Caleb Herron, and David McConnell; GREAT-granddaughter, Baleigh Herron; step-grandchildren, Peyton and Ali Taylor; sisters, Anne Jenkins and Dorothy Lane; brothers-in-law, Larry Bartlett an wife Sherry, Charles Bartlett and wife Wanda; all of his honorary grandchildren from Gate City Sports that he loved dearly; along with several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5pm to 9pm on Sunday, April 23, 2017 at the First Baptist Church Weber City Gymnasium. A funeral service will be conducted at 12 pm on Monday, April 24, 2017 at the First Baptist Church Weber City Gymnasium with Pastor R.D. Stallard, Pastor Joe Hill, and Pastor Riley Boy officiating. Music will be provided by Dale Jett and Hello Stranger, Belinda Range, and Josh Taylor. A Military graveside service will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park with the American Legion Hammond Post 3/265 conducting the rites. Pallbearers will be Dale Byrd, Greg Rhoton, Marty Hill, Tony Quillen, Jimmy-Don Smith, Anthony Lawson, David Jones, and Dustin Davidson. Honorary pallbearers will be Bruce Nichols, Fred Davidson, and his beloved Daniel Boone neighborhood. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and doctors in C2 at the VA Medical Center for the loving care. Friends may also call any time at his daughter Deanne Poston's home in Church Hill. Carter-Trent/Scott County Funeral Home is serving the McConnell family.
