Johanna (nee Hirsch) Bromberg, 92, passed away at home in Clearwater on May 11, after a brief illness. Johanna was born in Wiesbaden Germany in 1932 and immigrated to Tampa with her family in 1937. She and Rabbi Bromberg married in 1954 and together they served several communities in congregational and educational settings including Oak Ridge TN, Pittsburgh, PA, Boston, MA, Kansas City, MO and Omaha NE, returning to the Tampa Bay area, specifically Congregation Beth Shalom of Clearwater, FL in 1982. Johanna was a librarian and an educator by profession. She also volunteered in many capacities throughout the community, including as librarian and docent at the Florida Holocaust Museum, on the community’s Chevra Kadisha, as a beloved teacher of Jewish Bible, prayer and history, and as mentor, advisor and confidante. Until just weeks before her passing, Johanna was taking classes, learning, teaching and studying with her children and grandchildren online, always expanding and sharing her knowledge, love of life, art, travel and learning. She kept in touch with family and friends from throughout her life and across the country. The funeral will be held on Monday May 13 at noon at Congregation Beth Shalom 1325 Belcher Road Clearwater FL 33764 with David C. Gross Funeral Home. The funeral will be livestreamed. She was the beloved wife of Rabbi Kenneth Bromberg who died in 2002. She is survived by her children Naomi (Yaneer) Bar-Yam, Efrem (Nancy) Bromberg, Hillel (Chaya/Catherine) Bromberg, and her grandchildren Shlomiya (Binyamin) Lightfoot, Yavni, Maayan (Teva), and Taeer Bar-Yam, Jake and Max Bromberg, Caleb (Rebecca) Brommer, Liran and Aliza Bromberg, and two great grandchildren, Tirsiyah and Deuel Lightfoot, beloved nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and dear friends.
