John Martin Darcy
August 23rd, 1939 - September 28th, 2020
On Monday, September 28, 2020, John Martin Darcy of Englewood, Florida, died peacefully at the age of 81 in Tampa, Florida, after suffering a severe spinal cord injury from a fall this past July. John was born on August 23, 1939 at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Brighton, Massachusetts. He attended Our Lady of Presentation Grammar School in Oak Square and Boston Technical High School, graduating in 1957. After graduation, John enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, trained at Parris Island, SC and later was stationed as a helicopter mechanic at Quantico, VA and Weymouth, MA. After the Service, John worked in the emerging electronics field in the Boston area in the 1960's and later in Binghamton, NY in the early 1970's. His career in electronics led him to pursue industrial managerial work in Scranton PA. In the 1980's and beyond he undertook construction management where he built and restored a number of buildings in and around the Scranton area. Before he retired, he also pursued projects in printing and photographic design. He had a passion for architecture, building and design and fully expressed his remarkable talents in the second half of his career. John loved nature and the outdoors and enjoyed hiking, skiing, boating and swimming in his native New England, Northeast Pennsylvania and his beloved Southwest Florida. Some of his favorite spots included Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, as well as Skytop in the Poconos, Lake Skaneateles and the Gulf Coast of Florida. John was a fan of classical music and enjoyed attending concerts, especially at the Dorflinger-Suydam Sanctuary Grounds in Honesdale, PA and the Scranton Philharmonic. He was an avid reader and thinker who enjoyed learning new ideas and engaging in lively discussions with friends and family. He also enjoyed attending church and spending time with his pastors and fellow parishioners. John maintained close ties to his native home in Oak Square, Brighton, MA. For the last 25 years, John travelled annually to the Barry residence in Lynnfield, MA to re-unite with 24 boyhood friends- friendships that spanned 70 years. John appreciated the small things in life, including lying on the ground to see the beauty of the trees or stars above, sitting on the beach to watch the sunset, a well-told story and most of all, large bowls of ice cream with Bailey's Irish Cream over top or hot mashed potatoes with both butter and gravy. John was preceded in death by his father, John Joseph Darcy, and his mother, Muriel Connolly Darcy, of Brighton, MA. He is survived by his beloved longtime partner, Carol Hudak of Englewood,FL, his four children and spouses, Sarah E. Darcy (Boston, MA), John M Darcy, II (Kingsley, PA), Meghan Darcy Gabello and Nicholas Gabello (Dunmore, PA) and Kevin and Tracy Anescavage Darcy (Scranton, PA). John is also survived by five grandchildren: Gavin Darcy, Anna Gabello, Sophia Gabello, Emilia Gabello and Brynn Gabello. John is also survived by two brothers: Joseph Darcy and wife, Denise, of Waterboro, ME with nephews and nieces, Thaddeus Darcy, Bryony Darcy, Patrick Darcy, Joseph Darcy and Liam Darcy; and Thomas Darcy and wife, Shauna, of Walpole, MA and nephew, Thomas Darcy, Jr. The family also wishes to acknowledge the incredible support and friendship of the Warring Family of Scranton, PA, especially John Warring. Memorial services will be held in both Scranton, Pennsylvania and Boston, Massachusetts at a later date, public health policies permitting. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wounded Warriors Project or St. Jude Children's Foundation in John's name.
