November 18th, 1934 - January 28th, 2021
Charlotte , North Carolina - John C. Engler, born November 18, 1934, passed away on January 28, 2021, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife, Peggy; his four children David, Kathleen Malone, Father Chapin, and Steven; their spouses, Petra, Jason, and Leigh; and his eight grandchildren. John was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His wife, Peggy, was the single most important person in his life. John considered himself the luckiest man in the world to have married her. John was a 1956 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where he played as a walk-on for the Fighting Irish men's basketball team. Following graduation, John served as an Officer in the U.S. Navy. After his service, John joined Merrill Lynch, where he worked for over forty years. During his time at Merrill Lynch, John was the Managing Principal of the Charlotte office. He cherished his role in mentoring many financial advisors in the industry. Over the years, many of his colleagues have spoken of how impactful John's direction was on their own career and personal development. As a civic leader, John served as a member of the board of directors for many philanthropic causes including: Belmont Abbey College, Charlotte Symphony, Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, Catholic Diocese, and Discovery Place Science Museum. One of John's most beloved roles was his work with Carolina Healthcare Board of Trustees and serving as Chairman of the Board for Mercy Hospital. John lived a life of service to his community and faith. John was a dedicated Catholic and attended Mass daily. His friends called him "Father John," in recognition of his devotion to the Catholic Church. He was the recipient of the Colonel Francis J. Beatty award, which is awarded by the Catholic Social Services to an individual whose life exemplifies faith, dignity, dedication, warmth, and compassion. John also supported the Catholic Church by serving as a member of the Knights of Malta. Throughout his life, John loved to be surrounded by his family. He enjoyed playing golf in Linville, NC and spending sunny days at Litchfield Beach. John's legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of the many people he loved and supported. He will be missed dearly and left this world making it a better place. A private mass will be held for the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of John C. Engler to the Crisis Assistance Ministry of Charlotte.
