John G Filice
April 10th, 1942 - November 30th, 2016
John "Punky" Filice passed away peacefully on November 30, 2016 at the age of 74. Born on April 10, 1942 in Spokane, Washington, one of three children born to Carmine and Caroline Filice. He was one of the old-timers in Santa Cruz, having moved here with his family when he was 4 years old. He loved this area and never wanted to move anywhere else. John was a commercial fisherman for a short time prior to owning Lighthouse Liquors on Washington St. for many years. The store became a place for friends to meet for coffee and exchange news each morning. He loved sports and in particular baseball, playing at Santa Cruz High and Cabrillo College and later in men's leagues. He was passionate about cooking and felt the best times were those spent with family and friends enjoying his cioppino, calamari or other wonderful dishes he created, together with a nice glass of wine. He was always ready to help cook at different events. He enjoyed hunting and traveled the western states, including Alaska to pursue his passion. When he retired, he enjoyed spending time at his ranch. He always had a large garden and enjoyed sharing vegetables with his friends. John was a lifelong member of the Santa Cruz Elks Lodge and the 40 Thieves. His four grandchildren brought him great joy, and his face would light up with a smile whenever he saw them. The loss of his son, Anthony, saddened him deeply and turned his world upside down. Now his grandchildren say, "Pa is in Heaven to be with God and Daddy," and we know he is at peace. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jan Filice; his daughter-in-law, Jill Filice; four grandchildren, Bailey Filice, Raini Filice, Cheyanne Filice and Raylan Filice; brother, Chuck Filice. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his son, Anthony Filice on June 29, 2016, his parents, Carmine and Caroline Filice and his sister, Bobby Powers. At his request no services are planned. Arrangements are under the direction of Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel.
