When John was born his family was living along the Owyhee River in the Watson area before moving to the Vale area. From there the family moved to Vale Oregon. John participated in sports throughout school, boxing being a favorite of his. John spent many hours doing farmwork for neighboring farms until he turned 18. In 1953 John's friend convinced him to join the army. The army rejected his friend but recruited John. John had basic training in Camp Roberts in Saint Luis Obispo, California. He was then sent to Germany for training maneuvers. The Korean War was just over so John did not see any combat. He was discharged in 1955 and returned home to Vale. He also had many grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. John enjoyed telling stories of him growing up and teasing when the opportunity presented itself.
