John Martine, 81, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, on April 10, 2015. The son of Peter and Mary Goldstein, John was born on July 27, 1933 in Brooklyn, NY. John served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-1955, and it was then that he developed his lifelong love of travel. After his military service, John earned his associate's degree in culinary arts at the New York City College of Technology. John spent his whole career in food services, first in the inner city schools of New York City, then at a nursing home in New Jersey, and from 1981 until his retirement in 1990 as director of food and nutritional services at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, NC. John's passion was cooking, personally as well as professionally, and he enjoyed every aspect of it, from sourcing ingredients to serving delicious meals to his family and friends. John's survivors include his wife of 48 years, Suse; a son, Michael and his wife Emily of Chapel Hill; and a daughter, Kirsten Schrader and her husband Jason of Greensboro. He also leaves five much-loved grandchildren, Max, Cal and Lucy Martine, and Sophie and Millie Schrader. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 15 at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Home, 300 West Wendover Avenue, Greensboro. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.
