John David Mullen

July 2nd, 1940 - August 15th, 2024

John passed away peacefully on August 15, 2024 at the age of 84

Our hearts are heavy but so happy he is in heaven with God.

John David Mullen was born on July 2, 1940, in Detroit to Father Patrick Mullen born March 9, 1900 Birthplace Airdrie, Scotland and Mother Christine Mullen born March 22, 1902 Birthplace New Castle, England. John and his siblings Pat, Peg and Chris were raised in Detroit Michigan where his mother died when John was 8 years old which made life a little harder on him and his other siblings.

John is survived by his wife Julie Mullen of 18 years together, 15 years married. Sons Jered and John, Sons in law Mike and Joel, Daughters Michele and Amanda, Daughters in law Michelle and Tammy, Grandkids Alexis, Reece, Jose, Oscar, America, Kylar, Jaxon, Madison, Savanna, Caleb, Matthew, Joshua, Justin, Great Grandkids Elijah and Koa, Brother Chris, Sister-in-law Gay and all his nieces and nephews.

John enlisted in the Navy under the Buddy program; all 4 men went through the Recruit training program together in 1959. He lived in Mission San Jose when he went to the U.S.S. Shangri-La. John was in the navigation department for 4 years. The aircraft carrier John served on was part of blockade during the Cuban missile crisis of 1962. He enjoyed being in the Navy. After his service, John worked as an in-flight service supervisor for United Airlines for 4 years. January 29, 1983, John was sworn in as a Special Deputy – Sheriff’s Silver Mounted Posse. He served 4 years in Santa Barbara County. He loved riding his horse Raimi in parades and at the Long Beach Grand Pre. After he had many successful businesses throughout his life from LA to Sacramento. His last business was Valley Door.

John was my Project man. If one project was done he had 10 more on his mind. He would plan and draw out which one he wanted to do next. He was so gifted, so talented and had the ability to build anything. We have done hundreds of projects together. I was always his sidekick. He taught me so much about using tools. John was always my fun guy. Always making me laugh, joking around with his cute charm, always singing to me with his amazing voice.

He also loved to ride his Harley, Golf, Sing Karaoke, Diamond dots and hanging out with his friends and family.

One thing I taught John was how to love himself, his kids and grandkids. He was so grateful for that. I would tell him Honey making memories that’s our job. Tell our stories to our kids and grandkids.

John will always be immensely missed by all who knew him and we will always remember his kind eyes, smile, arm punches, forehead kisses, big hugs, love taps, laughter, sense of humor, jokester and his amazing voice.

In life, we sometimes have the incredible fortune of crossing paths with truly remarkable individuals. I was privileged to meet such a person in you, Mr. John. Though our time together was brief, your kindness and generosity have left a lasting impact on me. Rest in peace, Mr. John—you will always be remembered.

Oh boy, where to begin! I met John years ago at the Almond Tree where we all sang karaoke together! I was there during the period when he met Julie and she was the greatest thing that ever happened to him! I remember admiring the love they had for each other! My favorite times were at their home Christmas parties and John’s birthday casino night! Such good times! Found out John had a garage door business so he was my go to for garage door repairs and replacements! A couple years ago he said he was ready to retire and although I was very happy for him, I was sad to loose him as my go to! I remember John as a very soft spoken, sweet, caring, loving, funny friend. And Julie….you could see how he loved and admired her so much! Great couple and wonderful friends! He’ll forever be missed! Wish we all could have spent more time together these past couple years…RIP John❤️

Just A Thought John and I did a lot of projects together. This is a photo of the lumber rack we built for his work truck. He designed it & cut every piece as fast as I could weld it.. John always had a new idea for us to build something. Miss You John Mullen David Crow
