Brigadier General John Nolan, a beloved husband, father, and community leader, passed away peacefully at the age of 92, surrounded by family who loved him deeply. Born on July 31, 1932, in the Bronx, to Michael and Agnes Nolan.

John Nolan joined the U.S. Army in 1949. Over the next 4 years, he served as an enlisted soldier in the 46th Ordnance Battalion in Fort Irwin, CA. In 1953, BG-Ret. Nolan joined the California Army National Guard and accepted an Active Guard and Reserve (AGR) position. In 1954, he completed Officer Candidate School (OCS) in Fort Benning, GA and received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Ordnance Corp. In 1959, he completed the Company Commanders Course, and in 1965, took over command of Company D, 49 Support Battalion, in San Lenandro.

After commanding Company D, he transferred to the 115th Area Support Group (ASG) in Roseville, CA. During this stay in Roseville BG-Ret. Nolan served as the Material Officer for the ASG. From 1972 to 1976, he attended the Army Logistic School, and between 1979 and 1980, he attended the War College. In 1982, he took over the command of the 115th ASG, and attended the Chemical Biological Radiological School. In 1983 to 1985, BG-Ret. Nolan served as the Director of Logistic at the California Army National Guard Headquarters in Sacramento, CA and simultaneously attended the Command and General Staff College. In 1985, BG-Ret. Nolan obtained the rank of Brigadier General and retired from the National Guard. While in the military, BG-Ret. Nolan earned his Associate of Arts in Military Science, and his Bachelor of Science in Military Science.

John’s military career was distinguished and impactful.

In his retirement, John found solace and joy in gardening, where he nurtured both plants and friendships. His vibrant lawn, garden, and orchard were a testament to his nurturing spirit. He was known for his warm and welcoming personality. Family, friends, and neighbors often gathered at his home, where laughter, games, and stories flowed as freely as the ice cream he adored – whether it was spumoni or butter pecan, John had a sweet tooth that brought smiles to everyone around him.

He shared a deep and unwavering love with his wife, Grace, whom he endearingly called "Pooch." Their bond was a beautiful example of partnership and devotion, built on shared love, and Grace's delicious cooking, which John savored with enthusiasm. Together, they created a warm and welcoming home that was a haven for all who entered.

A prominent figure in the Sutter Creek Society, John was a member whose spirit and warmth left a mark on the community. He was always ready to support local initiatives and lend his expertise, ensuring that Sutter Creek remained a vibrant place for all its residents.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Grace Nolan; his cherished children: Dana Bueno, Elizabeth Hunter and her husband Jody Hunter, John Nolan II, and Andrew Cheevers, and a host of grandchildren: Sara and her husband Ben, Jessica, Melissa and her husband Jack, Brandon, Breeanna, and Brooklyn.
