John R. Popkey
November 2nd, 1947 - May 11th, 2006
John R. Popkey, 58, formerly of Menominee, MI, passed away on Thursday, May 11, 2006 in Hudson, Florida. He was born November 2, 1947 to the late Gilbert M. and Eleanor M. Ryan Popkey. John graduated high school in Marinette, WI in 1966. After high school he enlisted in the US Army and served in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged on October 3, 1969. In addition to Unit Campaign medals he was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service in combat, and the Army Commendation medal for meritorious achievement. He was part-owner and employed by the G.M. Popkey Company. In 1998 he moved to New Port Richey, Fl; and was employed by Practical Systems of Odessa, Fl; until January 2004. John also enjoyed being a volunteer at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point, Hudson, Fl; and was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and golfer. He was a member of Kettle Moraine Kennel Club and had top winning Airedale and Lakeland Terriers. John is survived by his wife, Renee Prager Popkey, whom he married on December 4, 1982; his sister, Judith ?Dolly? Jonas of Green Bay, WI; his brothers, Ross of Garden Valley, CA; William of Sacramento, CA; and Daniel of DePere, WI. He is also dearly loved his dog, Taz, and a wealth of family and friends. A graveside service was held Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at Knesseth Israel Cemetery, Gloversville, NY. Rabbi Martin Gordon officiated. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Florida Coalition to Cure Parkinson´s Disease Fund, USF - College of Medicine, 12901 Bruce B. Downs Blvd; MDC 02, Tampa, FL 33612-4742.
