John Bernard Rudnick

February 24th, 1943 - August 4th, 2018

John Bernard Rudnick passed peacefully on August 4, 2018, surrounded by his family. He was born on February 24, 1943 in Elmhurst, Illinois to Edward and Josephine “Rose” Rudnick. His family moved to the Portland area when he was a young boy. John married his wife Kathleen in June of 1969 and they have five children and 12 grandchildren. John worked in quality control engineering and spent his free time researching family history. He enjoyed lecturing and teaching others to research their own genealogy. John loved the Oregon Coast and spent many vacations camping, and exploring with his family. His departure will leave a hole behind that can only be filled with corny jokes, silly noises, big bear hugs and a quiet voice. He will be missed by all who knew him.

It’s almost Christmas. The 2nd one since you’ve been gone. We now have 12 grandchildren. Sara had a baby girl in November. She named her Coraline Ruby. She will be the last grandchild for us. All of the other grandchildren are growing into fine adults. Julie graduates from high school in June. And then another grandchild will be graduating every year for a few years. I’m carrying on but I really miss you during the holidays.

Today would be your 77th birthday. On Saturday Tori and I hiked to the top of Neahkanie mountain to spread some of your ashes. She had made a music playlist of some of your favorite music and we listened to it on the hike. It wasn’t raining but it was cloudy. After we had been sitting at the top for awhile it cleared up a bit and we could see the ocean down below. We spent the whole day doing things that you would have liked. I also bought a new car in January. I said it was a birthday present to myself. I’m doing good. I think about you often. Love you.

You have been gone for over four months, but I still miss you and think of you often. I hope you are at peace. I know you would be proud of me and I will keep working hard to keep your memory alive in your grandchildren. Love you!

You’ve been gone a year now. Life has gone on. Cameron graduated from high school. Sarah is expecting another baby. She is having a girl. We will have 13 grandchildren. I went to see Sara in Colorado in February. I went to Kauai to see Helen. It has been a good year, but bittersweet in that I wish you could have been here and in good health to see how everyone is growing up. Love you.

You would have been 76 today. I’ve been thinking about you all day. I’m glad for the years we had together and the 5 children we raised. I’d say you had a successful life. I miss you.

Just found this site. I will always remember the times we spent together, and especially when we were both youngish. You were uniformly kind and it was only later in life I came to understand what a blessing this is/was.
