John Strohm

Born May 30th 1923 to parents Jacob and Verona Strohm, John Schammel Strohm passed peacefully from this World on Thursday, Oct. 14th 2010 with his children at his bedside. A life long resident of Amador County, "Johnny" was a graduate of Ione Union High School. Although an athletic scholarship to St, Mary's College awaited, he remained at home to assist his parents with ranching and operation of the Buena Vista Store due to his brother being inducted into the Military. Thus began a life long vocation as a rancher that brought about great challenge, achievement, and joy to him and his family. His pride and passion revolved around family and friends, the land he lived on, and the cattle he raised. John was a reputation stockman - Strohm Ranch sent Hereford and Salers genetics into 14 different states, Canada, and 3 countries internationally. A lifetime member of both the American Hereford Assoc. and American Salers Assoc., he was a proponent of youth involvement in agriculture as advisor to the California Junior Hereford Assoc. and on-going sponsor with the American Salers Junior Association. Locally, John and wife Sandra were 12 year plus veterans as Ione Community 4-H livestock leaders and Amador County Jr. Livestock Auction Committee members. One of his proudest community service activities was as a founding board member of the Jackson Valley Irrigation District when during his tenure the construction of Lake Amador took place bringing irrigation water to the fertile Jackson Valley. John was preceded in death by his life love and wife "Sandy" in 1997. He is survived by their children, daughter Lissa Strohm Aichele (husband Gary) and son, J. Steve Strohm, both also of Buena Vista. John's smile, his laughter, and his well-lived life will not be forgotten. May his peace now be with his many friends. Celebrations include a Rosary on Friday October 22, 2010 at 7:00 PM and Mass of Burial on Saturday October 23, 2010 at 11:00 AM. Both services will be held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Ione, Calif. Visitation is available at Daneri Mortuary, 415 Broadway, Jackson, Calif. between 3:00 and 5:30 PM on Friday October 22, 2010
