Memorial

Tribute John Henry Thompson was born in Nebraska City, Nebraska, on March 1, 1933. The son of John Smith Thompson and Margaret Gertrude O’Neil, he grew up in farm country. His mentor was his grandpa O’Neil who kept him busy as a child and young man on his two working farms. At 16-years of age, John moved in with his grandpa full-time to help him manage the farms, tend to the horses, and feed the livestock. A few years later, as a young man, he enlisted in the Army, married his first wife, Patsy Thompson, and was off to serve his country in the Korean Conflict. As a member of the Army Airborne, he started his service as a paratrooper and was stationed in Japan. He later moved into working in the motor pool and becoming a Military Police Officer. After returning home from the service, John and his wife, moved from Nebraska to Denver, Colorado. He went to work in various places including Martin Marietta before striking out on his own to start a horse boarding and horse trailer sales business (Sleepy Hollow Ranch) and raise his family in Aurora, Colorado. Moving to Longmont, Colorado, in the 1970’s, he kept busy with several business ventures including a corner gas and feed store and a used car business. As life would have it, John found himself single after a divorce in the mid-1980’s but found love, once more, with Carol Graves when the pair married in the early 2000’s. They never stayed in one place long – living in Arizona, Nebraska, and Colorado. They enjoyed life and each other on their adventures before returning to their roots in Longmont. John was always quick with a grin and his signature, “How about that?”. He loved Folgers coffee and cheap donuts – trucks, tools, and tinkering in the garage. No matter how far he went, he always found his way back home where he could be close to family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Carol – his three children Richard, Joyce, and Robert – their spouses – three grandchildren – six step-children – and countless step-grand and great grandchildren. A graveside remembrance with full military honors will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2019, at 10:00 o’clock in the morning at the Foothills Gardens of Memories located at 14241 North 107th Street in Longmont, Colorado.
