Dr. John Morgan Thompson, 81, of St. Petersburg, FL, Clinical Professor of Neurological Surgery at the University Of South Florida School Of Medicine in Tampa, FL, died Thursday, July 21, 2005 at St. Anthony's Hospital. He was born in Tampa, FL and was a 1942 graduate of Hillsborough High School where he was elected to the Hall Of Fame. He received his MS Degree from Tulane University (Phi Beta Kappa) in 1946, MD Degree from Johns Hopkins School Of Medicine in 1948, AOA (Scholastic Society) and Sigmi Xi (Research Society) in 1948. He performed his Neurological Surgery training at the University Of Michigan in Ann Arbor 1949-1955. He was a Post Graduate instructor of Physiology at Johns Hopkins School Of Medicine 1948-1949 and a Post Graduate Neurosurgical instructor at the University Of Michigan 1955-1956 before moving to St. Petersburg to establish a practice in 1956 until his retirement in 1991. He was a Clinical Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at the University Of South Florida School Of Medicine from 1971 to 1986 and became a Clinical Professor in 1986 to 2005. He staffed the Neurosurgical Clinic and trained Neurosurgical residents at Tampa General Hospital 1993 to 2005. He was on the staff of All Children's Hospital where he served as Chief Of Staff in 1966, Bayfront Medical Center where he served as Chief Of Staff 1979-1981, Edward White Hospital, St. Anthony's Hospital, the former Sun Bay Hospital (now Kindred Hospital St. Petersburg) all in St. Petersburg, and Tampa General Hospital. He was a member of the Pinellas County Medical Society, Florida Medical Association, Florida Neurosurgical Society where he served as President 1964-1965, American Medical Association, Southern Neurosurgical Society, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons where he served as President in 1970, the World Federation of Neurological Societies, and was a Diplomat of the American Board of Neurological Surgery 1958 to present. He was awarded the Research Borden Award in 1948, the Exceptional and Distinguished Service Award by the Congress of Neurosurgical Surgeons in 1996, The Council Of State Neurosurgical Societies Distinguished Service Award in 2003, the Council Rudolph Award from All Children's Hospital and the Abe Gorday Award from Bayfront Medical Center. He served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946 and 1950-1952 when he was loaned to the U.S. Army where he was a general surgeon in MASH Unit 8225 on the front lines in Korea in 1951. He was a member of Fifth Avenue Baptist Church, the Tampa Bay Committee of Foreign Relations, St. Petersburg Yacht Club, and St. Petersburg Rotary Club. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy G.; one daughter, Dr. Lauralee Thompson of Los Angeles, CA; one son, Dr. John T. of Baltimore, MD; one sister, Mary Nash of Tampa; and two grandchildren, Lauren Thompson and John M. Thompson both of Baltimore.
