John Raymond Tobiason
November 9th, 1928 - November 12th, 2016
Dr. John Raymond Tobiason passed away peacefully at home into the loving arms of Jesus on November 12th, 2016 while surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Longview on November 9th, 1928 to Ray and Anna Tobiason. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Phyllis Tobiason, his children Julie (Steve) Becklund, Jan (Frank) Washburn, and Jim (Vicki) Tobiason, grandchildren Kristin Phillips, Brett (Syrrah) Becklund, Jacob (Julie) Washburn, Megan (Christian) McClung, Joe (Erika) Tobiason, Callie Tobiason, and Jonnie Washburn, and great grandchildren Sylvie, Soren, Avery, Carter, Lola, Reagan and Mason. Ray’s passions in life were his relationship with Jesus, his family, and service to others. Ray and Phyllis created a wonderful life together. He was an amazing husband, father, and grandfather. Ray is remembered for his fun and adventurous spirit. Memories include boat rides, water skiing, hiking, camping, motorcycle rides, skiing, singing, and road trips. His faith, unconditional love and support, service to others, and zest for life will endure as his legacy through all generations of his family. As Jesus said, “Well done thou good and faithful servant!” In his professional life, Ray had a long, successful career in education. He received a B.A. in Education and an M.A. in Administration from Pacific Lutheran University, along with a Doctorate in Education from the University of Washington. He began his career in the Puyallup School District where he spent 35 years as teacher, principal, and administrator. the last 11 years as Superintendent. Ray was elected President of Phi Delta Kappa, an international educational fraternity. He served for 2 years promoting education and visited over 100 chapters around the world. After retiring from the Puyallup School District he spent over 17 years working for education at the state level. Ray also served on over 35 professional and community organizations. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, December 11th, 2016 at University Place Presbyterian Church at 3:00. Remembrances may be made to the Tacoma Rescue Mission.
