John Haynes Vanderpool died unexpectedly of a heart attack December 31, 2016 in Gig Harbor. He was born Dec. 28, 1948 in Muskogee, Oklahoma and moved to Seattle in 1965. He was the son of John O. Vanderpool and Doris (Fricks) Vanderpool and twin brother of James H. Vanderpool (Lea), of Winthrop, Washington, who survives him. He is survived also by his son, John Gerrit Vanderpool (Amy) and five grandchildren Chey, Taylor, Cy, Riley and Ira Vanderpool of Hartstine Island, Washington, and a sister, Myra Vanderpool Gormley (Leo), of University Place, Washington. His wife, Terri Henderson Vanderpool, predeceased him in 2013. John had worked for the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services as a rehabilitation counselor for many years until he retired last summer. He proudly served his country during the Vietnam War as a Lance Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was proud of his Dutch heritage, was a voracious reader, a history buff, an Oklahoma Sooner football fan and an avid soccer fan. He coached girls and boys soccer teams in Oklahoma and in Washingtons South Sound for 35 years. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 28 at First Christian Church, 602 N.
