John Neal Willey, age 61 of Las Vegas, passed away on Thursday, November 3, 2016. He was born August 17, 1955 in Langdon, North Dakota to the late George Leroy Willey and the late Betty Jo Henry. John met the love of his life in Michael Lane and the two relocated to Las Vegas and purchased their new home together. Sadly, Michael suffered a massive heart attack and passed away at an early age. John was heavily involved in a volunteer capacity with the Human Rights Campaign/ Las Vegas Chapter doing his part to help advance the cause of equal rights and protections for LGBTQ people. He was also very active in politics and realized the importance of not sitting on the sidelines. John is survived by his sister Laura Olivas of Sacramento, CA, brother Jim Willey of Las Vegas, NV, and best friend Aaron Bolen of Las Vegas, NV. There is a celebration of life event that is being planned now and will be held at the Gay and Lesbian Center of Las Vegas, 401 S. Maryland Parkway, 89101. Parties interested in attending can contact Aaron Bolen by email at [email protected]. They will then be notified when the event is confirmed. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either St. Judeā€™s Cancer Center or The Clinton Foundation. Both charities do extremely important, lifesaving work that John deeply believed in.

I was one of, if not John's best friend in high school and college. We were in the band together both places; him with his sousaphone and me with my piccolo. We were quite a pair. I just learned of John's passing. This is so sad. I saw him last in Las Vegas at Christmas in 2013. I send my deepest sympathies to the Willey family. Aaron, I remember him speaking of you. Thank you for being there for him.

This is beautifully written. I absolutely adored John in the short few years I knew him. I remember calling him a few random times when I was feeling torn between choices or what I wanted to be doing, because after meeting him just once, you could feel he had this beautiful sense of wisdom. And any time I did, he was always just a wealth of knowledge and inspiration. Truly one of the most kind and gracious people I have ever met. I will always remember him for his kind words, his love for beautiful home decor, mhis graceful nature, and most of all his witty sense of humor that would come out when I wasn't expecting. John was a beautiful soul, and wherever this afterlife leads, I know he is in Paradise. Enjoy John.

I know so little about John, a long lost cousin of the Willeys. We visited from Minnesota to their home in California,Lord, 50 years ago or so. John and I exchanged some emails and Facebook in what turned out to be the last month of his life. The last exchange he said he was in hospital and very ill with infection. I have appreciated the momentos of John from his friends that have been visible on Facebook. John, of course, would not say much about himself, so these entries have been a glimpse at the good guy he seems to have been. I wish we had connected somehow sooner. His dad LeRoy came to Minnesota about 40 years ago when that generation of Willeys came together for a reunion--Donald, Genevieve, 'Ace', 'Inc' and Marvin. Then one by one the boys fell and finally Genevieve. Unforunately their children, my cousins, have not been in very regular contact, especially the California Willeys. I hope that we can have more contact with James and Laura over the next few years. God bless John's memory. And thanks to the friends in Las Vegas who have been beside him and now honor his memory with a service.
