John passed way suddenly on May 2, 2022 at his home in Castle Pines, Colorado. John was born on September 25, 1948 to Juliette (Fogerty) Winston and Earl B. Winston in Missouri. When John was 2 years old, the family moved to Denver, Colorado via train. John attended Catholic schools and East High School in Denver, Colorado. John left high school his senior year in 1967 to serve his country that he loved so dearly. He enlisted in the Navy and attended boot camp in Annapolis, Maryland. Although John was offered prep school at West Point, he volunteered to do the early out program and went to Vietnam. After four years, John received an honorable discharge in 1971 in San Diego, California as a Rank E-4 Radioman 3rd Class United States Navy. After returning from Vietnam, John attended Metropolitan State College in Denver, Colorado graduating in 1975 Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors of Arts in Political Science. He then continued his education attending Willamette University in Salem, Oregon with a Doctorate of Jurisprudence in 1979. Upon completion of law school, John served as the Chief District Attorney in Marion County, Oregon for 3 years. After serving as the Chief District Attorney, John returned to Denver, Colorado starting John Fogerty Winston and Associates with 7 law offices throughout the metro area. John was licensed in the United States Supreme Court, Oregon and Colorado Supreme Court, United States District Court, Colorado, Oregon and Northern Indiana District Court, United States Court of Appeals, Ninth and Tenth Circuit and was a Colorado Real Estate School Licensed Attorney. Legal expertise included; general practice, trial, litigation, arbitration, criminal law, securities, General Counsel Attorney for Penny Stock Giant and served pro hac vice cases. John was intelligent, insisted on honesty, devoted, loving, funny, caring, family man - a true patriot. He loved the outdoors, hiking, skiing, fishing, gardening, and his musical inclination had him playing the piano/organ by ear. John loved sports cars and speed, his favorite hobby was working on his Jaguars, converting them to 350’s. John leaves behind his soul mate, wife of 35 years Martha Jo, daughters Julie McCauley, Sarah (Steve) Nelson and son, Matthew Roeder. His pride and joy granddaughters Mackenzie and Riley Nelson. Sisters Marilyn (Leonard) Millward, Barbara (Mike) Rechcygiel, Laurie (Mark) Mitchell, Dori (Mark) Sear, Mark (Robbie) Winston and several nieces and nephews. Proceeded in death by his parents Juliette and Earl Winston, brother Matthew Winston and grandson Ryan McCauley. In laws Theodore and Helen Leland, brother-in-law Leroy Leland. Services will be held at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at 1:30pm. Family and friends are invited after for a celebration of his life to be announced at the military service. In lieu of flowers, thank a veteran and law enforcement for their service.
