Johnny “Smitty” Smith passed peacefully surrounded by family on March 6th, 2024 after a short courageous fight with ALS. He was born in Lakeview, OR on September 30th, 1948. Smitty graduated from Meadows Valley High School in 1967. After graduation he was drafted to the Army where he served from 1969-1975, spending two years in Vietnam. Being from Idaho, Smitty was known as “Spud” in his platoon. He was part of the 101st Airborne “Screaming Eagles” and was honorably discharged in 1975. When Smitty returned to Idaho he started working for J.I. Morgan, logging and driving truck. Smitty found this to be his passion and continued for 52 years. Smitty had many memories that he enjoyed throughout his lifetime. He was one of the best to run the Snake River for over 40 years. He found joy in camping, fishing, branding cows, four wheeling, working at the ranch, and spending as much time as possible with his family and friends. Smitty particularly enjoyed annual hunting camps with his closest friends and loved when his nieces and nephews would stop by to hang out on the porch. Smitty was loved by many and would lend a helping hand to anybody in need. His infectious smile and charismatic personality could brighten anyone’s day. To honor Smitty, please spread a smile and be kind to all. Smitty is survived by the love of his life Patti Smith, brothers Robert Smith (Connie), Randy Smith (Terri), Greg Smith (Vicki), Franklin Mather (Marcella), and many nieces and nephews. Smitty is preceded in death by his father William “Richard” Smith, mother Sibyl Smith, and brother James Smith. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Johnny’s name to the ALS Association or Meadows Valley Fire and EMS. A graveside service for family and close friends will be held on March 14th, 2024 at 1:00pm at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Weiser, ID. A celebration of life will be held in New Meadows, ID on August 3rd, 2024.

We Entrusted Johnny Smith's Care To

Thomason Funeral Home

For more than 100 years, the Thomason Funeral Home has worked to help the Weiser community heal after loss. We help families plan funerals, cremation services, and celebration of life services. Our story began in 1910 when Lloyd Northam opened the doors at the site now occupied by the current Weiser Elk’s Lodge. Since then, the business has had several names, partnerships, and owners. Among them was Dale Thomason, our namesake, who began working at the funeral home in the mid-1940s and purchased the home as a family business to run with his son. At Thomason, we focus on helping your family with personalized care. We do everything we can to provide professional, compassionate support to every family that trusts us with their funeral arrangements. Along with our sister location in Ontario, Oregon, we help Treasure Valley families connect, honor, and remember their loved ones....
