Jonah Isaac Hartney Newman

March 23rd, 1987 - June 9th, 2017

Jonah was born in Phoenix, Arizona, and grew up in Overland Park, Kansas. He graduated from the Barstow School where he earned fame for – among other things – being able to recite over 100 digits of Pi and doing more than 100 push-ups in a P.E. competition, thereby setting a school record. Always the prankster he gained notoriety for such things as putting up posters around school inviting students to the Cannibal Club. Join the 25, make that 23 members. After graduating from the University of Tulsa he moved to Portland, Oregon, where he spent the rest of his too short life. He was well-known in the Ultimate Frisbee community, astonishing all with his ability to leap high in his pursuit of the disc. In that pursuit he went to Hawaii, Arizona, Colorado, Washington, and many other places. He also performed at open mike nights at local comedy clubs and had a small but devoted following. Despite his move to Oregon he remained a die-hard Kansas City Royals fan, traveling to watch them play in two, yes two! World Series. He was ecstatic when the won it all in 2015. Jonah touched the lives of many people. He was generous and loving, a wonderful son, loyal brother, good friend, cherished co-worker. He leaves behind his mother and father, Sheila Hartney and Geoffrey Newman, his stepmother Vicki Newman, an older brother Patrick Newman, as well as many aunts, uncles cousins, and more friends than we can count. In lieu of flowers, please honor his memory by hiking in the woods, or going to the beach, or just reaching out to anyone who might need you.
