Joseph L. Bowie, 70, of Staten Island, passed away early Tuesday morning, September 24, 2013 at Mountain Valley Hospice, Gloversville following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Philadelphia, PA on January 2, 1943, Joseph was the son of the late Frank and Lucy Parker Bowie. Over the years Joe was employed as a Bar Tender for various establishments in the New York City area. He will always be known for his great sense of humor, Joseph could always tell a good joke and make his friends and family laugh. He enjoyed photography and loved caring for animals, including his canine companion, Bubba. His greatest accomplishment was his dedication to his family, he will always be remembered as a father figure to his many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings: Frank, Robert, Rudolf and Raymond Bowie; and a sister, Virginia Sheffield. Joseph is survived by one brother, Charles Bowie; several loving nieces, nephews and cousins; and a close friend, Hope Collins. A celebration of Joseph's life will be held at the community center located at his apartment complex in Staten Island on Saturday, October 5, 2013 from 1PM until 3PM. Arrangements are with Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, Gloversville, NY.
