Joseph H. Coffey
November 16th, 1929 - March 28th, 2016
Joseph Harley Coffey of Kernersville passed away on March 28, 2016 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House in Winston-Salem. Joe was born November 16, 1929 in Asheville, NC to Millard F. Coffey, Sr. and Jennie Hall Coffey. In addition to his parents, he also was preceded in death by his nephew Vick Coffey of Asheville. Joe graduated from Lee Edwards High School (now Asheville High School). He later attended Cecil Business College in Asheville and Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC, where he majored in Business Administration. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, having served during the Korean War. Joe worked in the petroleum industry for 30 years and retired from Texaco after serving as Terminal Manager in Greensboro, Charlotte, and Atlanta. Following retirement from Texaco, Joe and Ann returned to Kernersville. Desiring to continue working, Joe worked for 17 years in the Winston-Salem office of ATC of Chicago as Transportation Manager of WSTA. After his final retirement, Joe and Ann alternated living in Kernersville and Little River, SC. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Ann Binkley Coffey of the home; three sons, Robin Coffey (Annette) of Winston-Salem, Bill Coffey (Brenda) of Calabash, NC and Joey Coffey (Yvonne) of Winston-Salem; grandchildren Jason Coffey of Winston-Salem, Jyl Carter of Wilmington, NC, and Kevin Leonard of Lexington NC; special great grandson Hunter Bercuinas of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, and brother Millard Coffey, Jr. of Asheville. The family will receive friends at Pierce-Jefferson Funeral & Cremation Services from 6 to 8 on Thursday, March 31. Funeral services will be held 2:00PM Friday April 1, 2016 at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church, where Joe was a member, with Pastor Dave Cash, Rev. Phil Bauguess, and Rev. Karen Smith officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sedge Garden United Methodist Church, 794 Sedge Garden Road, Kernersville, NC 27284; Kate B. Reynolds Hospice, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103; or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. The family extends its heartfelt thanks to Novant Oncology of Kernersville, especially Dr’s Griff Kuremsky, Judith Hopkins, and Susan Hines and their staff in Kernersville and Winston-Salem; Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House, in particular Dr. Mark Corbett and a wonderful group of nurses and CNA’s who we will remember for their respectfulness, compassion and loving care; Dr. Aaron Boals; Dr. James Gibbs; and special friend Wendell Smith of Winston-Salem for many years of devoted friendship. Joe was a humble man who always put others ahead of himself and was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother, as well as a good friend and neighbor. He enjoyed studying the Bible and prepared himself well to meet his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Service Information
