Joseph Michael Deering, 86, of Takoma Park, MD, passed away on March 24, 2024, in Bethesda, MD. Born on September 28, 1937, in Newark, Ohio, he was a beloved Maryknoll priest for many years. Upon leaving the priesthood, he dedicated his life to international healthcare, focusing on blindness, HIV AIDS, and women's reproductive health. Joe was known for his kind and helpful nature, always willing to lend a hand to those in need. He had a passion for learning, maintaining a sharp mind and wit throughout his life. Joseph found joy in writing, gardening, woodworking, and all things related to tractors. Joseph was preceded in death by his wife Simone (Jernigan) Deering, his mother Mary Anne (Verbosky) Deering, his father John Anthony Deering, and his siblings Mary, Martha (Deering) Meyer, Sr. Dorothy Rose Deering John, Augustine, and Angela (Deering) Dean. He is survived by his grandson Todd McCoy and many cherished nieces, nephews, and Godchildren. Joe also leaves behind a Band of Brothers and their wives who have been loved and cherished as friends, mentors, confidants, and family since their days at Maryknoll. Among those friends who he held dear and were at his bedside during his last days are Pat and Patricia Murphy, Peter and Ceola Loan, Betsy Hague and Susan Schulken and family. Memorial services to celebrate Joseph's life will be held in the near future in Washington, DC, and Newark, OH. The Rapp Funeral Home in Silver Springs, MD, is assisting the family with the funeral arrangements. May Joseph Deering's legacy of intellectual curiosity, kindness, and dedication to helping others live on in the memories of all who knew him.
