Mr. Joseph O'Regan, age 78, of Johnstown, died Sunday evening, April 1, 2012 at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, following a short illness. He was born March 18, 1934 in Gloversville, the son of the late Patrick and Mary Keegan O'Regan. Joe was a 1951 graduate of Johnstown High School. Following high school he was an avid volleyball player and was known as the "Irish Setter" for the Johnstown YMCA traveling volleyball team. He later served his country honorably in the Army during the Korean War from 1954 to1956. Joe was employed as Service Office Supervisor by GTE and Contel in Johnstown for many years until his retirement. He was a life member of Concordia Club in Gloversville and a former member of the Gloversville Kiwanis Club and the Mohawk Valley Economic Development Corp. He served four years as division chairman of the Gloversville United Way Campaign and four years as one of four panel judges for awarding March of Dimes Scholarships. He also served as Alderman of Johnstown's third ward for 16 years. He was nominated for CONTEL Corporate Citizenship award for New York State. A loving husband, father and grandfather, Joe truly enjoyed his grandchildren. He was married on October 12, 1974 to Janice Steenburgh who survives and resides in Johnstown. Also surviving are four children: Brian O'Regan of Cooperstown, Lori Puglisi Joe, Larry O'Regan Christina and Amy Webb Brian Calabrese, all of Johnstown; a sister, Monica Vose of Fort Pierce, FL; four grandchildren: Breana McCoy, Haylee Webb, Isabella Calabrese and Michael O'Regan Rachael and one great-grandson, Jude O'Regan. Joe also has several nieces, nephews and cousins surviving, as well as his faithful pal, Jasper, a Bernese mountain dog. He was predeceased by his brother, Patrick O'Regan. The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 4 at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where a funeral service will follow at 6:00 p.m. Private interment will take place at the convenience of the family at Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Avenue, Gloversville, NY 12078 or to the American Lung Association, 155 Washington Ave; Suite 210, Albany, NY 12201.
