Joseph John Truhon
March 30th, 1941 - August 21st, 2024
The family of Joseph John Truhon, age 83, of Thiells, NY is saddened to share that Joe passed away in Montefiore Nyack hospital on August 21, 2024 after a substantial health battle.
Joe was born in Brooklyn NY on March 30, 1941. His family moved to Queens where he attended New York City public schools and graduated from Long Island City High School. He went on to study Business Administration/Management at Pace University. Throughout his youth, Joe’s enduring passion in life was sports, especially baseball, which he played regularly, honing his pitching skills while growing up in Queens. Joe was an avid New York Yankee fan throughout his life.
Joe joined the US Army Forces during the Vietnam era. He served as a cyber security specialist on Okinawa during the war effort. After returning home, he resumed his work at Blue Cross Blue Shield as a claims examiner and continued to develop his career in Cyber security. He worked with several major corporations in New York City in the rapidly growing security field, eventually working as Security Manager for United Parcel Service in Mahwah NJ until his retirement in 2009.
Joe met and married his wife Kathleen McShane with whom he started a family. The family lived in Astoria, Queens where they welcomed their two children, firstborn son Joseph James Truhon and daughter Christine Judith Truhon (Henderson). The young family relocated to Chester NY to raise their children and remained in Chester for more than 25 years, developing lifelong friendships. Joe coached the Chester Woman’s Softball League, and also organized the Parks & Rec Youth Basketball program for a number of years. He became the proud grandparent of Emma Truhon, Leah Truhon, CJ Henderson and Keira Henderson. His love of sports continued while regularly attending the sporting activities of his grandkids.
As a widower, Joe later met and married Carol Porter Maurer, relocating to Thiells, NY, and began his retirement in Rockland County where he has been active in the American Legion serving as a member of the Leo Ladders Post 130 Honor Guard, The North Rockland Rotary Club (past President) and participating in a Veterans Writing Workshop. He has given of his time by mentoring several candidates for citizenship, each mentee reaching their goal of US citizenship. Joe reached the hearts of many with his caring nature, his wit and affable personality.
Joe was predeceased by his parents Frieda Leher Truhon and Anthony Truhon; wife Kathleen Truhon; siblings Gloria Truhon Briggs, Lorraine Truhon Bryant, and Anthony Truhon. He is survived by his wife Carol Louise Truhon; his children Joseph James Truhon (Rachel Farmer Truhon) Christine Judith Truhon Henderson (Michael Henderson), his grandchildren Emma Truhon, Leah Truhon, CJ Henderson, and Keira Henderson; stepdaughters Christine Maurer VanZetta, Lara Maurer, and many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews and a host of wonderful friends whom he dearly loved.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to the American Cancer Society, The North Rockland Rotary Club, or plant a tree at A Living Tribute in Joe’s honor.
Memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, August 29th, 2024 from 3pm-7pm at TJ McGowan Sons Funeral Home in Garnerville, NY. Services will be held at 6pm at the funeral home.
