Joyce Marie Walburn
May 12th, 1935 - February 21st, 2023
Joyce Marie Walburn passed away peacefully after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer at the age of 87 at her home in Puyallup, Washington, on February 21, 2023. Surrounding her were family, friends and trusted caregivers. Joyce was born in Wisconsin on May 12, 1935, and was a lifelong Green Bay Packers fan and stockholder. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin, and her master’s in library science from the University of Washington. She then became a teacher and librarian. She started in Kaukauna, Wisconsin, and moved to Washington in 1964. She became head librarian at Auburn High School, where she remained until she retired. She positively influenced faculty and students in her professional career, gaining many lifelong friendships. Her time as a teacher and librarian gave her a great feeling of pride and accomplishment. She adored reading and books, always having three to four open at any given time. Joyce married Richard “Dick” Walburn on May 15, 1982, in Tacoma, Washington. They lived in Auburn until her retirement, when they then moved to Fox Island in 1989. Moving to Lacey in 2001, she lived there until 2021. Joyce was an avid collector of salt and pepper shakers, with the collection ranging into the thousands, bringing her joy. Her final home was at the Wesley Bradley Park Campus in Puyallup, Washington. She enjoyed her time there, establishing friendships with residents and staff. Some of her favorite activities were playing cards and participating in the book club. She loved sports, especially football. She loved the Packers and Seahawks. She also enjoyed watching the Mariners religiously every night. Joyce was strong in her Christian faith. She belonged to Resurrection Lutheran Church in Tacoma, Washington, leading the Sunday school program. She was also a member of Peninsula Lutheran church in Gig Harbor and St Mark’s Lutheran Church in Lacey. This gave her a great source of comfort throughout her life. Joyce is survived by daughters, Susan and Dianne; son, Dean; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, as well as her daughter, Sandy, and sons, Scott and Keith. She will be remembered fondly of all those who know her. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a breast cancer charity in her honor. Please leave condolences or share memories and photos on the Tribute Wall to the left.
