Johnny Vasquez, 86, passed away at home, surrounded by his wife and children at 6:40 am on Saturday May 6 2017. Johnny was born May 13, 1930 in Ruidosa, Texas, to Jesus and Maria Vasquez. He trained in the Army at Fort Bliss in El Paso and was stationed in San Francisco, California, during the Korean War. After leaving the army he attended Barber College in San Antonio, Texas. He moved to El Paso, Texas where he established his career. He owned and operated Johnny’s Barber Shop, on East Yandell, for 25 years. He met and fell in love with Rebecca Garcia. They were married on September 21, 1957. Johnny and family relocated to San Diego, California, where he lived the rest of his life. He loved spending time close to the ocean. Johnny was a warm, generous and friendly spirit. He opened his home and heart to people and made friends easily. He was curious and a hobbyist. His collections included coins, rocks, stamps, antique pocket knives, and National Geographic magazines. His passions were his family, music, and beer. He was known to be a bit of a rascal, which accounted for the twinkle in his eye when he smiled. His patient and giving nature made him a father his children adored and admired. He will be missed dearly. Johnny is preceded in death by his mother and father, 4 brothers, and 3 sisters. He is survived by Rebecca Vasquez, his wife of 60 years and their 6 children: Teresa Novak, Cynthia Vasquez, Christine Brink, Diana Vasquez Escobedo, Juan Victor Vasquez, Thomas Vasquez, and brother George Vasquez and sister in law Eloisa Vasquez. As well as 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Visitation/Vigil will be held on Wednesday May 17th at Vista La Mesa Christian Church 4210 Massachusetts Ave. La Mesa,CA 91941 4-8 pm (vigil service starts at 6) The Funeral Mass May 18th at 9am at Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala 10818 San Diego Mission Rd, San Diego, CA 92108 After the Mass we will have Military Honors outside followed by reception at the Mission, in the California Room.
