Judy Lou Sowell
October 26th, 1940 - August 21st, 2024
Judy Lou Sowell, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, peacefully departed this life on August 21, 2024, at the age of 83. Born on October 26, 1940, in Jefferson, Iowa, Judy spent much of her life in California, where she became a well-known antique dealer.
In the 1960s and 70s, Judy worked as a bartender at Bernie’s in Concord. Later, for 30 years, she managed Antiques on the Main in downtown Martinez, sharing her passion for history and beautiful treasures with her community.
Judy was known for her warm and feisty spirit, quick wit, and wonderful sense of humor, lighting up any room she entered. She had a green thumb, particularly for growing tomato plants, and took great pride in her garden. Beyond her love for gardening, Judy cherished the time she spent with her family, finding joy in their gatherings and creating lasting memories together.
She is survived by her loving children, Tami (Ed) Patrick, Kelley (Tony) Gladden, and Brian (Julie) Gladden. Judy was a devoted grandmother to Lisa, Amanda (Tyler), Ashley, Brittney, Aly, Vinny, Joey, and Bella, and a proud great-grandmother to Faith, Lina, Miles, and a fourth great-grandchild on the way. Judy was preceded in death by her son, Billy Barron, and her beloved husband of 45 years, Jim Sowell.
Judy will be remembered for her big personality, her love of antiques, her dedication to her family, and her friendship. Her memory will live on forever in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
A service to celebrate Judy’s life will be held at Oak Park Hills Chapel, located at 3111 N Main Street, Walnut Creek, CA 94597, at 11 AM on September 9, 2024. Burial and reception will follow service.
