September 2nd, 1919 - June 26th, 2012
Colfax-Julia Nelson Thompson, 92, departed this life to meet her Savior on Tuesday June 26, 2012. Funeral Services to celebrate her life will be held 3:00PM Saturday June 30, 2012 at Greensboro First Church of the Nazarene, where she was a charter member, with Pastor Bob McCabe officiating. Interment will be in New Garden Friends Cemetery. A native of Guilford County, Julia was the daughter of the late Villa Simmons and Samuel Snow Nelson. She was retired assistant Postmaster of the Colfax Post Office. At her church she held many positions including pianist and Adult Sunday School teacher. She was a hard worker and silently helped numerous people. She had remained active and was mentally sharp. She had countless friends and her passing will leave a void in the hearts of everyone who knew her. In addition to her parents, she also was preceded in death by her husband Samuel Raeford Thompson, her oldest son who died in 2001 Nelson Thompson, and her brother Sheldon Nelson. Survivors include her daughters Winona Nelson of Kernersville, and Anita Cantrell and Khris of Lexington; sons Dwight Thompson and Pattie of Lafayette, Tennessee, John Thompson of Colfax, and Joe Thompson and Diane of Columbia, South Carolina; daughter-in-law Verlene Peele Thompson of Asheboro; brother Elbert "Shadow" Nelson and Cappy of Forest, Virginia; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. The family will visit with friends from 1:00PM until time for the service on Saturday at the church.
