Julian "Julie" Prothro Voigt
August 22nd, 1931 - July 30th, 2024
Julian Prothro Voigt, better known as “Julie,” passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, after suffering a stroke. She was just a month short of her 93rd birthday. Born on August 22, 1931 in Augusta, GA, she was the daughter of Julian Davis Prothro and Virginia Glenn Evans. She had one sister, Rosa Virginia Prothro Jones, who preceded her in death. Julie grew up in Aiken, SC where she graduated from Aiken High School in 1950, excelling as a member of the National Honor Society and editor of the school newspaper. She attended Winthrop College for two years majoring in journalism. There, she met William R. Voigt, Jr. (Bill), a cadet at The Citadel, and they were married on October 4, 1952. Together they raised five children- three daughters and a set of twin sons. Julie was a proud wife and mother and followed Bill’s career which took them to Camp Stewart, GA; Aiken, SC; Pittsburgh, PA; Rockville, MD and Crofton, MD. Upon Bill’s retirement, they moved to Savannah Lakes Village, SC and later to Charlottesville, VA; eventually returning to Crofton, MD. At the time of her passing, Julie was residing in Summerville, SC.
Julie, known for her vibrant spirit and energy, enjoyed dancing, gardening, swimming, reading and travel. She cherished family gatherings and vacations, particularly to North Litchfield beach. A dedicated community member, she served as a Girl Scout leader, Sunday school teacher, library volunteer, and was always an active member in her local church. She was the quintessential southern lady and quite the social butterfly. Always stylish, she delighted in a good shopping trip followed by a quality manicure and pedicure!
Julie is survived by her five children, daughter, Laura Cook of Summerville, SC, son and daughter in-law, Randy and Penny Voigt of Blufton, SC; son and daughter in-law, Dave and Patty Voigt of Southport, NC; daughter and son-in-law, Liz and Jeff Salton of Vero Beach, Florida , and daughter and son-in-law, Tracey and Brad Fye of Arnold, MD. She also has nine grandchildren, Kristen (Bobby) Smith, Rob Voigt, Jessica (fiancee Ryan Armstrong) Voigt, Erin (Clifton Creech) Voigt, Katie Voigt, Matt Salton, David Salton, Brandon (Morgan) Fye and Adam (Paige) Fye; and seven great-grandchildren - Kieran, Bennett, and Greer Smith; Mia and Beckham Fye; Alder Creech; and Jack Fye.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. George’s Episcopal Church; 9110 Dorchester Road, Summerville, SC 29485. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. George’s Episcopal Church, the American Heart Association, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer organization, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
