Kathleen Parkhouse

February 7th, 1949 - July 18th, 2024

Kathleen Cannon Parkhouse, 75, of Colorado Springs, Colorado passed away on July 18, 2024 in Colorado Springs. She was born on February 7, 1949 to Moses H. Cannon and Kathleen Cannon in Washington, DC. Kathleen attended St. Mary’s High School in Colorado Springs and graduated in 1966. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder in 1970.

Kathy worked as a medical secretary for the Department of the Army at Ft. Carson, Colorado for 22 years. She then earned an Associate’s Degree in early childhood education from Pikes Peak Community College. She worked as a preschool teacher in the Head Start program in Colorado Springs for many years, followed by volunteer service in the Foster Grandparents program.

Over the years, Kathy received many commendations for good service, and was very active in various charitable activities, including a summer as a volunteer in what is now Mahpiya Luta (Red Cloud) In South Dakota, four years as treasurer for the local Terros emergency hotline, and many years as a volunteer at what was then known as the Marian House soup kitchen in the Springs. A strong follower of Christ all of her life, in recent years she has been a member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs.

Kathy’s interests over the years have included reading (since earliest grades!), writing poems, drawing, and doing research into family history. She was also an enthusiastic traveler, both in the U.S. and abroad, much of it on the back of a motorcycle with her former husband, Matt Parkhouse.

But above all, Kathy will be remembered for the love and support she has given to, and received from, countless friends and relatives. They are far too many to be listed here, but they know who they are. Her sympathetic ear and moral support for others was a constant in her life. She truly went out of her way to maintain relationships, and there are many now grieving. But her family are sure that Kathy, who wished not sadness but joy for everyone in life, certainly continues to do so now.

Kathy was preceded in death by her father and her mother, and is survived by her brother, James Cannon, and her cousins Margaret Adkins and Jane Holland, as well as other dear relatives.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Special Olympics, the Salvation Army, or the American Heart Association.

Kathy’s memorial service will take place at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, August 27, 2024 at Ascension Lutheran Church, 2505 N. Circle Drive, Colorado Springs, Co 80909. Decisions about the interment of her ashes will be made at a future date

Ruth Lynne Cannon Snow

Years ago when I wanted to see if I might be related to any of the Cannons in Colorado Springs and called them out of the phone book, I reached Kathy's Mom, the widow of Moses, a first cousin of my father, and went to meet both Kathy and her Mom Kathleen. What a delight as they welcomed me into their home; my father was ecstatic and shared about his cousin. Kathy was friendly, and we both liked genealogy. She put me in touch with her first cousin Jane Holland, whom I later met in person in California. Kathy came to our home for dinner, and we enjoyed being with her. Reading her lovely obituary helped me know of other things in her life I wish I had known about.

I always looked forward to Kathy's visits to the D.C. area, when my siblings and I would gather with Jim, Christine and Kathy. I have many happy memories of larger family gatherings and some special memories of her smaller visits with me and Raven when we took long walks through the Sligo Creek Park and Northwest Branch park trails in Maryland. I remember the one time we hiked Mt Sugarloaf with cousins Jim and Kathy and then visited a civil war medicine museum in Frederick Maryland. The consistent thread through the year was always Kathy's conversational skills. She asked the right questions to make anyone open up and offered stories about her life in return. She often seemed to default to a supportive position for those of us younger than her. Whatever we said we want to do, she encouraged us where others might be skeptical. She could always break the ice and she could always uncover what people were passionate about. For me it was reading and writing that we connected on. Through the years we shared our book recommendations, and she even mailed me the Maisie Dobbs book series, a historical detective series I read and enjoyed and remember fondly still. When I think of Kathy, I also think of the support she gave my dad, her e cousin Paul Cahill, writing him letters when he was ill, and hosting a family Thanksgiving, the last one he experienced. I will miss her positive influence, and her spirit of acceptance, kindness and encouragement.

I am really going to miss Kathy. We became friends in 3rd grade in Denver, until my family was transferred when I was in 5th grade to overseas. Amazingly, when I started attending St. Mary's sophomore year, Kathy and I got reconnected. We were fast friends since then, sharing a love of Nancy Drew books, The Twilight Zone old episodes, pioneer history, and annual short trips in Colorado every summer to places like Dearfield and Camp Amache (even one summer to visit an author that Kathy liked!) She put up with me as a room-mate for several years before her marriage. Kathy, I hope you will look out for me from heaven.

I am Kathy and Jamie's cousin on their father's side; our fathers were brothers. Kathy and I never lived close to each other growing up and really started our relationship in the 70's. We have gotten together once a year for many years. We shared a passion for geneology, having shared illustrious ancestors, particularly our Grandparents and Great Grandparents who were prominent Mormons. She and I spent many hours researching our history and particularly that of our Grandmother, Lilian Hamlin Cannon, about whom Kathy was planning on writing a biography. Lilian was the first female Professor at BYU, when it was a teacher's college. Besides being a plural wife, she was married to two prominent Cannons, not concurrently. I will miss Kathy's warm, gentle, supportive nature as well as her occasional silliness! She will be missed as she was loved by so many.

Though we were rarely together, because of our kinship I always felt our distant connection. Such a kind and loving soul as you were surely received with joy in heaven.
