The 3 rd of 4children, he graduated from Yakima High School in 1947, and in 1951 graduated from the University of Washington Business school. Ken joined the U.S. Navy, serving aboard a destroyer during the Korean conflict. He returned to Ellensburg, WA in 1953, where he met Charlene Rhodes. They were married on April 2, 1955, and moved to Anacortes, WA, where Ken worked at the Shell Oil refinery. Here they welcomed son, Jon, and daughter, Kristi. At this same time, he actively returned to the Masons, joining Occidental Lodge in Ballard. Upon his retirement from Boeing, he served as Grand Master of the Washington Masonic Lodge, in 1993. He remained a lifelong member and supporter of the Masonic Lodge.
