Lacy Rankin Harwell
June 20th, 1929 - March 15th, 2004
Harwell, Lacy Rankin, Sr., 74, of St. Petersburg, Florida, died Monday March 15, 2004 at home. Born in Florence, South Carolina, he moved to St. Petersburg in 1969 from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He served in the US Coast Guard and transferred to the US Naval Reserve retiring on May 23, 1986 with the rank of Captain receiving the USNR American Defense Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal and the USCG Commendation Medal. He was the former Senior Pastor at Maximo Presbyterian Church, St. Petersburg. He received a B.A. highest honors from the University of The South, Sewanee, TN, a Masters in Divinity at Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, NJ, a Diploma in Post-Graduate Theological Research at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland and a Masters in Sacred Theology at Union Seminary, New York, NY attended as a Danforth Fellow. He served on the Board of Trustees of Eckerd College, Board of Trustees of Bayfront Medical Center, Board of Trustees of St. Petersburg Junior College and the Board of Trustees of Presbytery of Southwest Florida. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Margaret; two sons, Lacy R. Harwell, Jr. of Washington, DC and Joseph I. Harwell of Sharon, Mass.; two daughters, Claire Harwell of Newton, Mass. and Emily Harwell of Washington, DC; four brothers, David W. Harwell of Myrtle Beach, SC, Hicks Harwell and James R. Harwell both of Florence, SC and Joseph D. Harwell of Columbia, SC; a sister, Anne Hill of Midlothian, VA and two grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, March 21st at 3:00 p.m. at Maximo Presbyterian Church, 3200 58th Avenue South, St. Petersburg, FL 33712, officiated by Pastor Holly Wildhack, assisted by Capt. Moses Stith. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to The Hospice of The Florida Suncoast, 300 East Bay Drive, Largo, FL 33770 or Maximo Presbyterian Church, 3200 58th Avenue South, St. Petersburg, FL 33712.
