LaVerne "Bucky" J. Darrow
January 19th, 1925 - October 17th, 2008
LaVerne J. "Bucky" Darrow, 83, of Brand Rd., Sprakers, NY, passed away Friday October 17, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, NY. Born in the Town of Root, NY on January 19, 1925 a son of Birdsley and Irene Sweet Darrow. He was a lifelong area resident and attended schools in Rural Grove, NY. He was a U.S. Army-Airforce Veteran of World War II serving with the 302nd Engineer Combat Battalion. He was stationed in Japan and held the rank of Sergeant. Mr. Darrow first worked for the Darrow family farm on Logtown Rd. He later was employed for over 35 years for the Town of Root Highway Department. He was Highway Superintendent 12 years before retiring in 1981. He was a former member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles in Canajoharie, NY, and was of the protestant faith. Mr. Darrow enjoyed taking care of his yard and gardening. Bucky married Lois J. Klingbeil Darrow on May 21, 1949. She died on February 21, 1986. Survivors include three sons, Gary Darrow Gail of Portsmouth, NY, Steven Darrow Vicki of Otego, NY, Gordon Darrow Patricia of Grand Island, Florida. Three daughters, Janet Darrow of Sprakers, NY, Donna Dopp Paul of North Syracuse, NY and Betsy Darrow of East Greenbush, NY. Four sisters, Doris Derrick of Amsterdam, NY, Lois Avery of Palatine Bridge, NY, Eleanor Klingbeil of Stuyvesant, NY and Joyce Douglass of Little Falls, NY. Fifteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. LaVerne was pre-deceased by his brothers and sisters, Herbert Darrow, Dewey Darrow, Alice Keller and Muriel Herron. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday October 21, 2008 at 11:00A.M. at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St. Fultonville, NY with the Rev. Kathy L. Reese presiding. Interment will be in Maple Ave Cemetery in Fultonville with full military honors. The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday October 20th, 2008 from 4:00 to 7:00P.M. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Rd, Loudonville, NY 12211, The American Diabetes Assoc. 7 Washington Square, Albany, NY 12205 or to the Rural Grove Volunteer Fire Department, 1192 State Hwy 162, Sprakers, NY 12166.
