Leila May
December 6th, 1933 - September 6th, 2024
Leila Fern May, affectionately known as Lea and Grandma Darlin, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2024, at the age of 90. Born on December 6, 1933, in Syracuse, Kansas, she spent her later years in Lutz, Florida, surrounded by the love of her family. Lea was a talented musician who brought joy to many as the leader of her own band, Country Sunshine. Her passion for singing country and western music was evident in everything she did; she could often be heard singing while cleaning or driving. Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, and Alan Jackson were her favorite artists, and she cherished every moment spent performing on stage. Family was at the heart of Lea's life. She was married to her beloved husband, Bob May, for 48 wonderful years, and together they created countless memories RVing across the country, visiting family, and making new friends. Lea was a dedicated mother to her five children: Connie (Ed), Rhonda, Vicki, Donna, and Doug (Cindy). She was preceded in death by her children Vicki and Doug and her grandchildren, Lanny, Angie and Tracy. She adored her many grandchildren, including Tracy, Kellie, Angie, Jessica, Lanny, Amanda, Aaron, Savanna, and Andrew, and was a proud great-grandmother to many. Lea and Bob doted on their dogs, Bella and Ruby. Beyond her musical talents, Lea enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and word searches, and she had a particular fondness for BBQ, cherry strudel, and Heath bars. She spent countless hours watching her favorite old westerns, especially Gunsmoke and The Rifleman, with Bob by her side. A true believer in her faith, Lea always kept those in need in her prayers, embodying compassion and kindness. She is survived by her sister, Helen Tolbert, along with numerous nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly. Lelia Fern May's vibrant spirit and love for music and family will forever be remembered, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
