LeRoy Elmer Hilbers was born in Stanton County, Nebraska, July 7, 1927. He passed away on March 31, 2018. He moved to Yuba City, California with his family in 1936 and graduated from Yuba City High School in 1945. At 17 years old he joined the Merchant Marines and traveled the world from 1945 - 1946. In 1946 he was the last man drafted from Sutter County and served in WWII through the end of 1946. He was called back into the Korean War and served our country at Fort Ord, California from 1948 - 1952. LeRoy met his wife Nadene of 63 years while building rental houses for his future mother-in-law in Gridley, California with his father Carl. LeRoy began his career working for Dale Green Construction. Then worked for Lamon Construction where he developed a lifelong friendship with the Lamon family. In 1962 he started LeRoy Hilbers Construction and in 1983 he and his eldest son Kurt formed L & K Construction. In 1988 Hilbers Incorporated was formed with the addition of his remaining sons Glenn and Larry. LeRoy retired in 1992 although he continued buying and selling properties and taking care of his rentals through his eighties, and he also traveled extensively with his wife Nadene. They especially loved their family cabin in Butte Meadows and staying in their trailer at Green Acres Campground in Fort Bragg, California. Their annual June trips to Green Acres became a favorite of their family and friends. LeRoy and Nadene's favorite pastime was playing cards with friends. They also loved their potluck group that lasted over 40 years and continues today. LeRoy was an active member of First Lutheran Church. A long standing member of Gridley Moose Club, active member with Yuba Sutter Sirs Club. LeRoy leaves behind his wife Nadene of 63 years, daughter Lori Maskell (John, deceased) of Marysville, Kurt Hilbers (Mary) of Yuba City, Larry Hilbers (Joan) of Sutter, and Glenn Hilbers (Lisa) of Yuba City, 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. LeRoy was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 6 sisters. He will be greatly missed by family, friends, and the community. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to First Lutheran Church or charity of your choice in his honor. Private family interment at Sutter Cemetery at 11:00 am Saturday morning, April 7th, 2018. Memorial services will be held at First Lutheran Church, 850 Cooper Ave., Yuba City, 12:30 pm on Saturday April 7th,2018.
