He is survived by his loving family – wife of 58 years: MaryLouise Blakemore Beard, four children and their families: Nancye Loren “Lori” Beard 57 and Paul Postle, Jr. of Moncks Corner, SC and her daughter Ashley Louise Read 27; Steven Lewis Beard 55 presently living in Timor- Leste with his wife Maria Dolores “Pica” Cordoba-Beard; Jeffrey Blakemore Beard 53 of Greer SC and his wife Karen P. Beard; David Scott Beard 52 of Sparks Md. and his wife Kathy B. Beard and their two children Audrey Lane & William David; a sister Margot Beard Baker 78, her husband Lou Baker (deceased) of Orlando Fla., and her sons David and Doug Baker and their families; and numerous friends and neighbors who’s lives he and MaryLouise touched during their lives together. He is predeceased by his parents: Lewis Levi Beard Sr. and Golda Ellen Harmon Beard – originally of Pioneer, Ohio. Lewis “Lew” was a 1949 graduate of Male High School in Louisville, Kentucky. He attended the University of Louisville before entering the Korean War conflict with the US Army where he was honorably discharged as a corporal. He returned to Kentucky to finish his studies at the University of Kentucky where he met his future wife MaryLouise Blakemore. His vocation was in journalism and then advertising/sales promotion which led to a successful career as an advertising manager for several companies including Inland Homes, Reynolds Metals, Devoe Paints and Bigelow Carpets. Lew was an idea man and he never quit coming up with creative ideas for everything from how to promote a business or product, to how to travel more efficiently to how to appeal to a youngster at Christmas time. Lew’s interests were varied, but he had a passion for golf, sports, history, geography and travel. Most of his personal travel consisted of road trips with a young family to various parts of North America instilling in them a love and appreciation for new experiences, the great outdoors and the multitudes of cultures to be found beyond the limits of our front yards and neighborhoods. He especially took an interest in the lives of his children and grandchildren and of course his wife MaryLouise and strived to seek a path for them that kept them engaged, found them success and happiness, kept them safe, and made them feel loved. In typical fashion Lew (Lewie to his family and close friends) wished to keep his arrangements simple and thus symbolic. After his cremation, his family will gather in the coastal area of Charleston, South Carolina to charter a boat, celebrate his full life (with all family present and accounted for) and scatter his ashes off the coast of Sullivans Island.
