Lex Holland

Lex Holland, 78, passed away on Sunday, August 11, 2024 from ALS. He also had Parkinson’s disease. Lex is survived by his wife Marcy of 50 years, his son Travis and his son’s wife Anne and their children Aria and Jude, and his daughter Shana Grundy and her husband Mike and their children Troy and Ryan. He is also survived by his sister Gretchen Drinkard and his brothers Stephen, Jon, and Rick Loesch and numerous nieces and nephews. Lex was preceded in death by his adoptive parents, Alex and Maretta Holland, his sister Sandy Corlett, and his birth parents, Hal and Mabel Loesch. 

Born in Denver on May 24, 1946, Lex lived in the Denver area all his life except for undergraduate college and when he was in the Marine Corps. He graduated from George Washington High School in June 1964 and later received a BS in economics from Lewis and Clark College and a MS in accounting from the University of Colorado. Lex became a CPA. 

In 1996, Lex retired from the Federal Government after 20 years working as an auditor for the US Department of Education in Denver. He then started teaching accounting at the Community College of Aurora and at Metropolitan State University of Denver. He liked teaching and used to joke that it took him 50 years to find a job he liked. One of the highlights of his career was having the opportunity to teach a course in managerial accounting at Shanghai Normal University in China in the summer of 2009. In 2010 he retired from MSUD.

Lex skied for over 60 years and was a volunteer instructor with the National Sports Center for the Disabled (NSCD) in Winter Park for 20 years, working mostly in their sit ski program. His other leisure pursuits included tennis, hiking, ballroom dancing with his wife, biking, running (until his knees gave out), long walks through his neighborhood with his wife, yoga, working out, and SCUBA diving. He also enjoyed travel (42 states, 47 countries), reading, bridge, gardening and yard work. He donated blood or platelets about 230 times.
