Mementos

It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Linda Lee Thompson on October 16, 2024, at the age of 84. A beloved mother, both of her sons and other family were able to spend time with her before she passed peacefully in Tucson, AZ.

Born September 21, 1940 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Clarence and Ollie Andrews, Linda grew up as the oldest of three children. She attended The University of Northern Iowa, then called the Iowa State Teacher's College, where she graduated with a double major in math and science. After a few years of teaching in public high schools, Linda switched over to editing and writing math and science textbooks, a career she loved for the rest of her life. Her work in this field earned her a spot in Who's Who in American Women.

Linda was always a strong and independent woman, especially after her divorce in mid-life. She cared deeply about others and was a natural leader. As such, she volunteered with a variety of organizations. In Seaside, Oregon, she was involved with the Astoria Library and joined The American Association of University Women. She also served on the board of The Pioneer House (providing housing for homeless people) and later on the board of the Women’s Resource Center (serving abused women). In San Luis Obispo, California, Linda volunteered with the Friends of the Library and was essential in creating and organizing a reading program which supported and motivated new or struggling readers– mostly 1st and 2nd graders.

Linda was also an animal lover, especially of yellow labs. They were her constant companion and were just as loving, loyal, and friendly as she was. A perfect pair. Linda's other great love was Christmas. It was her favorite time of year- a chance to see family, play Christmas carols, hang stockings, and eat turkey dinner with all the fixings. She will be greatly missed by family and friends alike.

Linda is survived by her two sons, Bruce Thompson and Curtis Thompson, and their wives, Anne Thompson and Kathleen Johnson respectively. She is also survived by her sister and brother, Terry Andrews and Steve Andrews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Ollie Andrews.

Since Linda's friends and family are spread far and wide, no in-person memorial will be held. Please leave you remembrances here. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your local women's shelter, library, children's literacy program, or animal shelter.
