Lindsey Williams Hill
February 28th, 1928 - November 28th, 2017
Lindsey W. Hill, 89 passed away on November 28, 2017 at his home. He was born in Beaufort, NC to the late Lillye Belle and Robert Hugh Hill. He is preceded in death by his lovely wife Jean. They shared 65 years of marriage together. After graduating from the Beaufort school system, he attended Oak Ridge Military Academy, and graduated from UNC-CH with a BS degree in Business Administration. While at home at a Christmas party, he met his future wife Jean. She was a student at Meredith College in Raleigh and they dated for the next 5 years. After college graduation, the Korean War was in its fury so he enlisted in the US Air Force and was stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas, Lowery AFB in Denver, Colorado and Cannon AFB in Clovis, New Mexico. He was selected to attend OCS in San Antonio and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. He and Jean were married and she joined him in San Antonio. From there, they were stationed at Tyndall AFB in Panama City, Florida. They left Florida and drove for his next assignment at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, Alaska. At the time, Alaska was considered foreign duty. Their time in Anchorage was shorter than expected and Lindsey was given the opportunity to leave the military. They drove back across the US to North Carolina. Lindsey secured a job in Fayetteville, NC with Associates Discount and it was there their daughter was born. He was transferred to Wilmington, NC and relocated to Greensboro, N.C. for a new job with Pilot Life Insurance Company. They were transferred to Nashville, TN, and back again to Greensboro to the home office of Pilot Life. He was there until retirement. He and Jean loved living in Greensboro and remained there for the rest of their lives. Lindsey was an avid reader, most interested in military history with a photographic memory and an amazing recall of dates and historical facts. He loved Carolina football, basket ball, NASCAR, politics and international travel which included numerous trips all over Europe and Northern Africa. Lindsey was awarded the Cross of Military Service by the United Daughters of the Confederacy for his service in the Air Force during the Korean War. He received an Honorary for his great grandfather who served in the Confederate Army in 1862. He was a member of First Baptist Church Greensboro, The American Legion Post 99 Beaufort NC, and Life member of UNC-CH Alumni Association, The Rams Club, Life Member of Phi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, Member of Fort Macon and a Member of Friends of Gettysburg. He is survived by his daughter Cathy Hill of Greensboro.
