Lloyd Nies died July 12, 2024 at Mount St. Francis of Assisi Nursing Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado from complications related to a six year battle with Parkinsons disease.

Lloyd John Nies was born to Ted Sr. and Esther (Turbiville) Nies on October 21, 1945, in Pierre, South Dakota.  His family lived on a farm south of Pierre and then eventually on a farm south of Draper.  Lloyd attended Williams Creek county school through eighth grade and graduated from Draper High School in 1963.  He went on to attend Northern State College in Aberdeen and graduated in 1968 with a degree in Elementary Education.

In 1970 he moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado and began his career as a teacher.  Lloyd also worked for several years at the Colorado Springs based “Myron Stratton Home” serving young people in need where he made lifelong friends.  While teaching, he earned his Masters Degree in Elementary and Special Education in 1980 at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.  He retired from teaching in 1990 but continued to substitute teach until 1999.  After his retirement, he had a lawn care service and from 2011 to 2022 worked for the City of Colorado Springs Spray Parks until his health deteriorated.

Throughout his life Lloyd loved to travel.  He made trips to Russia and Japan as well as several trips to Europe always bringing back presents.  He enjoyed the adventures that Colorado had to offer such as snow skiing, water skiing, and sailing.  He loved to plan outings when family members visited, entertaining family and friends with sightseeing trips and whitewater rafting.

After traveling and searching the world over he found the sweetest woman and married her at age 44 on July 28, 1990.  Phyllis Hurtubise was a true complement to his life, and they shared almost 34 years of travel and adventures and were gracious hosts to anyone in their home.  On July 11, 1995, they excitedly welcomed their son Johnathan Lloyd into their life.  To have a son and watch him grow from a little boy to be a successful man in life was Lloyd’s greatest joy and blessing.

Since Lloyd was married later in his life, he developed strong relationships with people from his church, work and with nieces and nephews, especially with his sister, Mary and her husband, Steve, and their seven sons and one daughter.  He worked hard to be a good uncle and was attentive to visits and phone calls and remembered to call on everyone’s birthday.

Lloyd is preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Esther Nies; his parents-in-law, Phillip and Patsy Hurtubise; four brothers, Keith, Gary, Stephen, and Anthony Nies; sister-in-law, Sandra (David) Nies; sister-in-law, Kay; and brother-in-law, James.

Those grateful for sharing his life, his laugher, and his love are his wife, Phyllis; son, Johnathan, and Johnathan’s fiancée, Victoria Garcia; his step-children, Robert Vance as well as Robert and Shastel’s daughter, Hannah and her son, Hudson; and Andrea (Jesse) Dixon as well as her three children, Matthew, Luke, and Ashleigh; his sister, Mary, and her husband, Steve Haugaard of Sioux Falls, SD; brothers Ted, Jr. and wife, Bev of Draper, SD, David of Presho, SD, Doug and his wife, Jackie of Murdo, SD; and sister-in-law, Charlene, of Winner, SD.  If you were a special niece or nephew or great-niece or nephew, there was no doubt in your mind that you were special and all of them will greatly miss Uncle Lloyd.

Memorial Service, 11:00AM, Saturday, August 24, 2024, St. George Anglican Church, 217 East Pikes Peak Avenue, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80903.
