Mr. Louis Petrelia, Sr., 96, of Gloversville, died peacefully on Friday, September 30, 2016 at Mountain Valley Hospice with his family by his side. Born in Manhatten, NY on May 12, 1920 he was the son of the late Sebastian and Anna DeBello Petrelia. During WWII, Louis was a Gunners Mate on the U.S.S. Irving S. Cobb (Liberty Ship) as an armed guard for the Navy. He received many medals for his service including a Commendation from the French Government in the Battle of the Bulge. On September 14, 1940 he was united in marriage to Maria E. Zizzo. That union lasted 70 years until her passing on August 9, 2010. He was also predeceased by his brother, Anthony during WWII. When Louis returned home from the war, he worked for SS Corrugated Paper Machinery Company in Brooklyn. As a Turn Key Engineer, he traveled the world setting up factories in Mexico, Ireland, England, Scotland, Holland, Venezuela, Panama and Canada. Louis and his wife Maria lived in Brooklyn for many years raising their only son, Louis Jr. They also lived in Seaford, NY and Fort Lauderdale, FL for some time before moving to Gloversville in 1985 to be closer to their family. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was a 3rd Degree Knight. He also was a member of the Mayfield Servicemen's Club. Louis was a proud Veteran who loved his country and his family. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Survivors include his son, Louis Petrelia, and his wife Carole of Gloversville; three grandchildren, Risa Legg, Anthony Louis Petrelia and his wife Jennifer, Nicholaus Petrelia and his wife Katrin; 6 great grandchildren, Logan Legg, Kathryn Legg, Lane Petrelia, Alexandria Petrelia, Elijah Petrelia and Ana Marie Petrelia. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at 10a.m. at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville. Burial with military honors will follow in the Mayfield Union Rural Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Monday evening from 4 until 7p.m. at the funeral home. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
