Louise Elizabeth Porter, born in San Jose, California, December 10, 1919, joined her older brother, Fred Jr., and completed the family of Fred B. and Effie (Cox) Hurd of Missouri. Seattle would soon become and remain home for Louise with the exception of significant years in Bremerton, Washington, during World War II. Louises father moved the family to Seattle, when she was seven, to manage a California chain mens shoe store opening on 1st Avenue. The family settled in Seattles University District. For a short time during the Depression, Louise lived with her family in the back of the shoe store. She continued to go to school in north Seattle, attending University Heights Elementary, John Marshall Jr. High, and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1937. After high school, she received credentials in Business/Stenography from Edison Vocational School. In Bremerton, Louise worked in the Captains office in the Naval Shipyard and attended First Presbyterian Church where she met and married Ray Porter in 1944. Joann was born, and soon after, the family was back in Seattle where twin daughters, Kathleen and Eileen were born. The Porter home was established and the children raised in the Montlake District of Seattle. Louise worked in a dental office as the assistant and bookkeeper in the mid 50s through 60s. The family faithfully attended and served at Tabernacle Baptist Church on Capitol Hill; Louise would attend this church for the rest of her life. Throughout the years, relatives and friends, including many missionaries were welcomed into the home by Louise and Ray - to live for awhile or just share a wonderful meal, always with beautiful flowers on the table. Louise gave of her time and worked continually for her family and friends. Retirement years brought volunteer work at the church for Louise and Ray and many enjoyable travels, until Ray died in 1997. In 2001, Louise moved into the vibrant Crista Retirement Community, then to an adult family home in 2011 where she recently celebrated her 94th birthday. Louises words written in 2002 to the next generation are, This world cannot promise you peace; that only comes by trusting the Lord as your Savior. Life with Jesus her Savior began for Louise as a high schooler. Everlasting peace came to Louise on March 3, 2014, when her gracious Lord released her from her struggle with dementia and took her to her heavenly home. Hallelujah for the life He gave and redeemed!
