Lucille Talbot McGarry

Lucille Talbot McGarry, 90, of Charlotte, NC, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2023. Born in Waterbury, CT on June 2, 1933, and raised in nearby Naugatuck, CT alongside her three siblings, she was the second daughter born to Joseph E. Talbot, a lawyer and politician, and Grace Cleary Talbot, a teacher and homemaker. Lucille attended the College of Saint Elizabeth in Convent Station, NJ, where she excelled academically and was president of the student body. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and later earned her master’s in education at Towson State University. Following graduation, Lucille began her teaching career in Washington, DC where she met her future husband, Edward R. McGarry (Ned). They married in 1957 and moved to Honolulu, HI, where Ned was stationed as an explosive ordinance diver in the US Navy. Their first child was born in 1958, followed by three more children. In 1971, the family moved to Louisville, KY where Lucille taught middle school math and raised their four children. Lucille and Ned relocated to Charlotte, NC in 1987 where Ned continued working for Royal & Sun Alliance. They loved Charlotte and the many friends they made there. Guided by her Catholic faith, Lucille was generous, warm, and loving. She had a quick wit and loved a good joke. Her interests included bridge, garden club, and bible study. In her later years much of her time was spent doting on her expanding brood of grandchildren. Lucille’s final years were spent fighting Alzheimer’s disease, which stole her memory, but never her smile. The family is grateful to her many caregivers over the years, especially to Deyonne and Nancy. But no one was more devoted to her than her husband, Ned, who was there for her every single day. All who witnessed his care of Lucille saw the meaning of true love. Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Barbara, brother, Joe, Jr., and an infant son. Survivors include her husband of nearly 66 years, Ned, her sister Grace Talbot Bryn of Annapolis, MD, her four children Brian McGarry (Rhonda) of Bel Air, MD, Kevin McGarry (Tess) and Robert McGarry of Louisville, KY, and Elizabeth Donlon (Kevin) of Charlotte, NC. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Amy, Christine, Caroline, Matthew, Kyle, Brooke, and Carl, and three great grandsons. A memorial Mass to celebrate Lucille’s life will be held on Saturday, October 28 at 11:00 AM at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Charlotte, NC. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
