Lucille Ellen Peterson Newman
August 19th, 1933 - January 26th, 2015
Lucille Newman passed away peacefully on Monday, January 26, 2015, at the age of 80, after a lengthy and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Lucille was born to Mr. and Mrs. Percy E. Peterson on August 19, 1933, in Aberdeen, South Dakota, the third child of four siblings, Betty, Elwood “Bubs” and Fred. Lucille attended Rosary College in Chicago, Illinois, and later was employed by the Aberdeen Police Department in South Dakota. Lucille and James met in Aberdeen, South Dakota, and were married July 1, 1955. Their careers and travels initially landed the family in Olympia, Washington. Lucille worked for DSHS and later for the Department of Labor and Industries, until retiring in 1987. Lucille was an avid reader, loved to travel, take weekend camping trips with friends and family, play cards, do crossword puzzles, play the piano, cook, garden and listen to music of various artists. Our fond memories of mom will be her infectious smile, never ending support, and quick wit. In her later years, she would ask the girls to jump in bed to warm up or watch TV with her; her great granddaughters would do the same to watch cartoons. Lucille always cherished her family, friends and the lasting relationships with them over the years. A loving and devoted mother, she is survived by her son, James E. Newman; three daughters, Lori Freeman, Ann Aqualis and Celly Calica; five beloved grandchildren, Ben, Nicole, Shelby, Joaquin and Kody; and two great-grandchildren, Tiana and Hailey. Lucille was preceded in death by her daughter, Alice; and husband of 59 years, James O. Newman. The family expresses special appreciation to the wonderful aides, nurses, hospice, clinical and administrative staff of Providence Mother Joseph Care Center. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Providence Mother Joseph Care Center, 3333 Ensign Road NE, Olympia, WA 98516, or to the Alzheimer’s Association. Please leave memories of Lucille or condolences for her family in the Guestbook below.
