Lucy Ellen Romero, beloved wife, sister and Auntie Booboo, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2020. She was 70. Lucy was born on January 3, 1950, the third child of six siblings. Born in Long Beach, California to mother, Ophelia Mesa, and father, Joe Mesa, while also being raised by her Nona and Nono. She grew up and first lived in Southern California, spending her childhood through young adulthood in Los Angeles in the San Fernando Valley before moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico in the late 1980s. It was in Santa Fe where Lucy met and married the love of her life, Julian Romero. Lucy is remembered by her brothers and sisters as caring and always available to help. She studied and received a Masters Degree in Library Science, but also found time to care for and teach her sisters. Lucy taught her youngest sister Debbie to read, and would help her other sister, Dolores, write letters for nursing school. She was a great teacher with anything in life from reading to cooking. Following her move to Santa Fe, Lucy net and married Julian Romero in 1989. They spent the next 24 years laughing, working, and attending church at First Baptist together. In the last years of his life, Lucy devoted all her time to caring for Julian until his passing in 2013. Following his passing, Lucy continued with her lifelong hobbies like knitting, crocheting, teaching children at church, and spending time with her friends and "Comadres". Her sister Dolores also recalls the kindness Lucy continued to show, "When I called, she would listen, give advice and help calm me down." In addition to her love and compassion, Lucy also had a wonderful sense of humor. Dolores's daughter Rebekah remembers, "Auntie booboo loved sharing corny jokes. When talking on the phone we would share and trade jokes. Booboo would have a good ol' laugh." Gone too soon the family will miss and always remember their "Lucy in the sky with diamonds". She is preceded by her husband Julian Romero, mother Ophelia Mesa, father Joe Mesa, grandfather Nono, grandmother Nona, sister-in-law Pam Mesa, and brother-in-law Lee Lubin. She is survived by her brothers, Randy McWilliams (wife Jane) and Joe Mesa (wife Cathy); sisters, Cecilia Murphy (husband Joseph), Dolores Lubin, and Debbie Burruel (husband Arthur); cousin Loretta Sagona (husband Michael); nephews, Jason Mesa, Jeremy Mesa (wife Jamie), Arthur Burruel (wife Bessie), Shawn Iwaoka, and Randy Rick McWilliams (wife Naji); nieces Rita Gonzales (husband Elias), Theresa McWilliams, Anna Maria Banuelos (husband Robert), and Rebekah Lubin; and her many grand-nephews and grand-nieces: Monique (husband Shane and daughter Ellowyn), Josh (wife Jessica), Marlo, Amado, Santos, Nayela, RJ, Jacob, Ophelia, Arthur, Abraham, and Aaron. Due to current circumstances, the family will be holding a private burial on Monday, April 13th at 3pm with plans for a future memorial yet to be determined. The family also wishes to thank Lucy's friends and "Comadres" for their kind support and words of condolences.
