Lydia Misquez Barkey

Lydia, age 95, passed peacefully August 26, 2024 with family by her side.
Lydia was born in 1929 in Westwood, Lassen County, CA.
After a number of years, the family moved to Marysville, CA, where Lydia was active in drama, sports, and social clubs at Marysville High School. She graduated in 1947, and then attended Yuba College.
Lydia is survived by her children, Valerie Bowden (Alan), Diane Hilbert, Brad Barkley (Sharon), and Julie Barkley (Shelene); her sister, Juanita Misquez; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Julian, and Francisca; her brothers, Rick, Julian, and Willie; her son-in-law Jerry Hilbert; and grandson, Matthew Barkley.
Lydia was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
As her children were growing, she was a Blue Bird, Camp Fire Girls, and Cub Scout leader.
In 1969, she began working for YCUSD, at Park Avenue School, as a bilingual classroom aide for the newly conceived Federal Bilingual Education Act. Finding her passion, she was determined to become a certificated educator.
She returned to Yuba College and California State University, Chico, CA, to earn her Bachelor's degree and bilingual teaching credential. She devoted 26 years to teaching until she retired from YCUSD in 1995.
Funeral services will be Friday, September 6, 2024, at 11 AM at Ullrey Memorial Chapel. Burial to follow at Sutter Cemetery.
