September 19th, 2012
"Build thee more stately mansions, O my soul!" Died on September 19, 2012, five days short of her 104th birthday. Born Madeline Schukar in Byron, Nebraska, she served as a nurse in the U.S. Navy and the Los Angeles public health system, obtained her bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska and her master's from UCLA, and was an inspiration to all who knew her. For 35 years she lived at Vista del Monte in Santa Barbara. She is survived by her granddaughter and great- grandson. "Till thou at length art free,/ Leaving thine outgrown shell by life's unresting sea!"
